so pli has left gbc to nourish her amazing illustration talents! (as you can see on her blog.) since she has drawn so many of us over the years, we were asked to turn the tables and draw her. it was compiled in to a little keepsake book for her to keep. unfortunately i don’t have images of the book, but this was my version of the lovely pli!

elise asked me to design the invite for pli’s party. i totally had to make it 150% (maybe 300%) pli. i looked at some kate spade promotions since she’s really sweet on her lately. and then there’s glitter with a deco flair. {pli, i’m still waiting for you to sport those gold lamé pants.}

gifts for syd! this year she got some potatones! (they are stones painted like potatoes… POTATONES! they also sound like a potato music group, perhaps a potato rock band? i’m on a roll with these puns.) *many people have expressed that i could have a real future in painting rocks to look like potatoes. you can also see my current obsession with the tissue paper poms. they are amazing. and with felt {still} and craft stock {still}. there was also a sewing theme to this year!

how long it takes to actually sail from one place to another, and for the quiet spaces in between my incredibly talented friend priscilla (pli) is doing 1thingapp illustrated for the month of june, same thing siscles and i did for april! but she asked me and her (also very talented) sister to fill in the couple days while she gets her wisdom teeth out! (joy! for me anyway, less for her.) here it is! i was torn because there was one about cereal and fruit in the morning (one of my favourite things ever!) but i have also always loved the idea of living on a boat going place to place for amazing adventures. plus i liked the idea of representing time. i think maybe i’ll do the cereal one tomorrow for fun. i have a sketch already and i know my friend posted it since it’s something we share every week. i hope he enjoys this one anyway!

special 1thingapp for for waterlution artful waters event! this post stuck out to me from the first time i saw it this morning. didn’t get a chance to work on it until tonight. but this was the first thing i drew super quick in my sketchbook… the layout took a little bit to get it to sit the way i wanted. plus a blue that only exists in pantone/rgb.

double chucks!!1!! syd and i wore the same shoe/pants the other day! she took a picture and i thought it would be a good way to start testing out the tablet more. so i guess this is my first digital pencil drawing. i’m still getting used to it. the whole file failed last night RIGHT when i was just about done. i lost all the painting work, but saved most of the pencil work with exporting to psd. oye. it’s still not as fluid if i had penciled in real life, but it’s closer. i wish there was a paper angle function, maybe with your left hand, you could shift it easily (PATENT PENDING!)

sigh… we’re winding down. it’s my last 1thing illustrated for this month! i was hoping to do chalk this whole month and was happy that this was posted since we often associate chalk with kids!  i realized there was still a bunch i wanted to experiment with, but i really let the words influence the direction (i think everyone—including me—is surprised there’s only one cat illustrated… i should of drawn more cats.)  no doubt thought, next month’s artist in residence is super awesome! check out the gratitude project at www.1thingapp.com. melvinandsyd: Getting my first high-five from my niece!

way back in university, one of my drawing profs made us do 100 drawings in a short span of time. i didn’t really like her (i don’t remember why) so i thought i’d stick it to her by drawing with coffee and a sharpie (she was a pretty traditional medium gal). it ended up being one of my favourite sets of drawings.  it was nice to revisit the idea of coffee stains for this one. check out the gratitude project at www.1thingapp.com. melvinandsyd: friends who make a 3 hour coffee chat seem far too short
